Why your link shows a blank card on WhatsApp, and how to fix it

By Haigreeva Kondury, founder

You share your site in a WhatsApp group and get a bare blue link. No image, no title, no description. Your competitor's link shows a neat card. In India especially, where so much sharing happens on WhatsApp, that card is often the first impression.

Why it happens

When you paste a link, WhatsApp fetches the page once and looks for a few tags in its HTML: the Open Graph tags. The three that matter most:

  • og:title: the bold title on the card
  • og:description: the line underneath
  • og:image: the picture

The card is blank for one of three reasons:

  1. The tags are missing. Common on sites built quickly with AI app builders.
  2. The tags are added by JavaScript. The tags exist when you inspect the page in your browser, but WhatsApp reads the raw HTML and doesn't run JavaScript, so it never sees them. (Same root cause as sites that are blank to AI crawlers.)
  3. The image can't be used. It is a relative address like /preview.png instead of a full https:// address, it is too large, or it is blocked.

How to check

  1. View your page's source (right-click, View Page Source).
  2. Search for og:image. If it isn't there, that is your answer.
  3. If it is there, copy the image address and open it in a new tab. It should load, and it should start with https://.

Check more than the homepage. Each page needs its own title and description; otherwise every shared link shows the same card.

What to ask your builder

Please add Open Graph and Twitter card tags to every public page, in the HTML the server sends (not added by JavaScript): og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url and twitter:card set to summary_large_image. Each page needs its own title and description. Use a full https:// address for the image, 1200 × 630 pixels, and keep the file small (under 300 KB works well for WhatsApp). After deploying, show me the tags in the raw page source for the homepage and two other pages.

"I fixed it, but WhatsApp still shows the old card"

WhatsApp remembers previews for a while. To test a fix, share the link in a chat where it has never been shared before, or add something harmless to the end of the address, such as ?v=2, so WhatsApp treats it as a new link.

Why it is worth ten minutes

A blank card doesn't affect how your site works. It affects whether people tap. Every share in a group, on LinkedIn or in Slack either looks like a real product or like an unfinished one.
